Where we come from
Made by the BC cannabis community, for it
420Express grew out of Metro Vancouver’s cannabis community with a simple belief: great BC cannabis should be easy to get, fairly priced and nobody else’s business.
So we set out to build the shop we always wanted to order from. A menu we choose by hand, from AA to AAAA flower to live resin, shatter, hash, vapes and edibles. Our own drivers on the road every evening across Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam, Surrey and Richmond. And plain, odour-proof parcels that travel to every corner of the country, from Victoria to St. John’s.
Our name says it all. 420 is the number that has stood for cannabis culture for more than fifty years. Express is our promise to you.

A code word that became a culture
What started as a 1971 after-school code word turned into the worldwide shorthand for cannabis, with April 20 as its unofficial holiday. In Vancouver, 4/20 grew into a 25-year tradition of rallies calling for legal cannabis.

The road that brought us here
Long before there was a 420Express, British Columbia was earning the reputation we carry in every order today.
Late 1960s – 1970s
Seeds head north
Young Americans avoiding the Vietnam War draft settled in quiet corners of BC like the Kootenays and the Gulf Islands, and brought cannabis seeds with them. Plenty of water, long summer days and forested hills made the province a natural place to grow.
1971
“Meet you at 4:20”
In San Rafael, California, a group of high-school friends known as the Waldos agreed to meet at 4:20 p.m. by a statue of Louis Pasteur and go looking for a hidden cannabis patch. They never found it, but the code word stuck, spread through the Grateful Dead crowd and went around the world.
1990s
The world learns the name “BC Bud”
Careful growing and resin-rich strains made BC cannabis famous far beyond the province. “BC Bud” became a badge of quality: not one strain, but a standard. It is the standard we still pick our menu by.
1995 – 2019
Vancouver lights up every April 20
The first 4/20 gathering in Vancouver in 1995 was a small crowd downtown. It grew into one of the biggest cannabis events anywhere, first at the Vancouver Art Gallery and then at Sunset Beach. At its 25th edition in 2019, the City estimated about 55,000 people at the peak.
October 17, 2018
Canada makes it legal
The Cannabis Act came into force, making Canada the second country in the world, after Uruguay, and the first G7 nation to legalize cannabis for adults. Each province sets its own rules; in British Columbia the legal age is 19.
